How Do The Norfolk Jaycees Provide Leadership Training?

Most of the leadership training, provided by the Jaycee organization, is achieved
through active projects. Members learn the leadership skills through
responsibilities as project chairperson or project helper.

All projects and programs run by a Jaycee chapter fall within one of five major programming Areas of Opportunity. These categories and sample projects
within them are as follows:

Individual Area of Opportunity:

Within the Jaycee Creed is a line which states "Earth’s great treasure lies in human personality,". This short statement details that which is the Jaycees foundation for individual development.  Programming in this area include finance management
(including tax preparation, banking, and wills), public speaking training such as Toastmasters, personality testing, and more.  These are usually
completed with help from outside speakers.

Community Area of Opportunity:

Within the Jaycee Creed is a line which states "Service to humanity is the best
work of life,". This short statement details that which is the Jaycees foundation for community development.  Programming in this area would include any project that
either educates community members, or improves the quality of life in a community. Such past events have been Clean the Bay Day, Adopt-A-Street, partnering
with the youth of the Salvation Army at Christmas and Easter, donating
to the homeless through a partnership with St. Columba Ministries,
fundraising for cancer drives and more. 

Management Area of Opportunity:

Within the Jaycee Creed is a line which states "Government should be of laws rather than of men,".  This short statement details that which is the Jaycees foundation for management development. Programming in this area would include any program or project that enhances a member’s management skills.

Business Area of Opportunity:

Within the Jaycee Creed is a line which states "Economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise,". This short statement details that which is the Jaycees foundation for business development. Programming in the area
would include any business-oriented training or other program
that contributes to the economic prosperity
for members and the community.

International Area of Opportunity:

Within the Jaycee Creed is a line which states "The brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations,". This short statement details that which is the Jaycees foundation for development of goodwill, understanding, and cooperation
among all peoples. Programming in this area would encompass all projects
and programs that enhance a member’s knowledge of different
cultures and countries around the world such as participation
in the NATO Azalea Festival.
